Heroes: Season 3 Episode 11 - The Eclipse, Part 2
Monday, December 8, 2008 at 12:24PM
This is my first review of a Heroes episode. I was so bored at work deeply moved by it that I just had to put pen to paper. Let's get started shall we?
Jungle fever
Can I just say this now. I can't stand Peter nor have I ever been able to. I tolerated him in the earlier episodes because I was afraid that he'd absorb all of my charisma and render me useless but now that he's powerless he's really showing himself to be what he is really is - an arrogant twat. How about this quote to Nathan (said whilst holding a machine gun) "I'm expendable". If only he was. What the Hell was he thinking going all Rambo in the jungle? I had to laugh when he managed to hold the baddies up for all of 4 seconds.
The Haitian was fantastic in this episode. Jimmy Jean-Louis is really making the role his own. It would seem that in addition to being able to block other people's powers and selectively pinch their memories, he is also able to administer what can only be described as a "brain enema". Poor Baron Samedi: looks like it's off to the nursing home for him. Did anyone else notice how The Haitian seemed to just kill two of the Baron's henchmen just by touching them from behind? It was like the Vulcan death-grip. Here's me thinking that Leonard Nimoy invented it...

It was good to see Nathan stop being a puppet for at least a whole scene. I loved him flying into Baron Samedi at supersonic speed (even though it didn't really work). Shame he's decided to go off to Daddy with his tail between his legs (especially since, in the previous episode, the Baron told him that his own Dad had warned him that Nathan was coming and to "be his self" (i.e. a murderous people-trafficker). Nathan has irreparable emotional brain damage it would seem.
The Hunt
Two questions about the sniper scene. Firstly, the only way I can think to explain why at the end of the previous episode Noah has a sniper trained on Sylar's head and in this episode Sylar and Elle are getting jiggy on the floor and Noah still hasn't popped a cap in them is because he's a dirty-old man. Think about it; Elle's pretty hot, Noah's wife is so far past it that she's coming back round to the beginning, why not stop and have a peep for a few minutes? This also leads me to the conclusion that Sylar probably sucks in bed (sorry Zachary). Even if Noah is a peeping tom - he's unlikely to have been watching for more than a couple of minutes...
Anyway I digress. The second question I have about this scene is: why the Hell did he use a laser-sight AND how did it take him 8 shots to put a single bullet in one of two unarmed suspects? Come on Noah - get your game together! I did enjoy seeing him getting all Terminator-esque in the hallway. Some great Noah lines this episode too: "I want you to be scared, just like Clare (bear) was. This ends today." I tell you, if that man grounds you, do as he says.
A supermarket guys? C'mon! I mean WTF? Who is dumb enough to wander into a supermarket to try to patch themselves up in broad daylight. Even funnier than that though - where did Sylar get cash to burn - he chucks a wad of it to the (awestruck - "oh my God I'm an extra on Heroes!") supermarket dufus? It's not like the dude has a job or anything.
The Kill
Loved it. Noah slits Sylar's throat with a Stanley knife only after beating seven shades of shit out of him. That'll do it. Noah definitely redeemed himself from his earlier lecherous ways. Is this the end of Sylar? Of course not but we'll talk about that in a minute...
The Horny Bug
Poor old Mohinder. He's really not had much luck recently. He can't figure out why the eclipse is taking away everyone's powers and when his dodgy rash finally clears up he's held prisoner by Darth Petrelli. Loved the "I think you need proper motivation" line from Darth - beautifully delivered. Rather hilarious how the "motivation" is a teeny tiny little cigarette lighter burn on Mohinder's forearm from Flint. These guys mean business. What's the next level - a Chinese burn?
To say it was a surprise to see Mohinder beat the bejeezes out of Flint would be an understatement. This is what happens when you corner a horny man. He's got to beat something - might as well be Flint's head I guess...
The sad thing is though that by the time Mohinder scrubs the dead-guy smell off of himself and gets to Maya's place (isn't it convenient she happens to be at home?), the eclipse is over and he's back in bug-boy mode. No nookie for you my friend. Tragic comedy.
Best. Day. Ever
Second funniest line in the episode (the first also being Hiro's - see later). I'll be honest, I didn't like the idea of Hiro as a ten year-old boy but it's certainly growing on me. I loved it when Seth Green (who's great in this episode btw) tells him that the shop is not a library and he needs to pay for all the comics. Hiro's response was hilarious: "Then we buy it! ... This one too, please" and holds up an X-Men comic. So funny. I thought Breckin Meyer was funny too - it tickled me when he got all awestruck when Matt Parkman comes into the store: "dude - that was Matt Parkman!"
The funniest line in all of the comic book stores had to be Seth Green's though: "There's a legend I heard from a guy at a convention who heard it from a dude who heard it from another dude that one more 9th wonder story exists". Hilarious and delivered flawlessly. Well done Seth!
Matt & Daphne
Sorry guys. I really like Greg and Brea but I didn't like any of their scenes in this episode. It's not their fault - I think the writing was just weak. Like, why does Daphne have bilateral (read both) paralysis of her legs only when she has CP? I'm a doctor and that's tough to explain. The writers seem to have decided to turn Daphne into the biggest borderline personality disorder / emo in the world (Daphne's emotional problems >> Peter's). Her "I'm a villain, a nemesis" line made me cringe. Matt really is the ugly shoulder to cry on isn't he. Poor chap. I also never realised how weird Matt looks when doing his mind-reading thingy. I guess it's more noticeable without the sound effects but I've definitely detained less crazy people under the mental health act at work than him!
Clare Bear
For God sake please kill Clare properly. I'm fed up of her character. It's not like she can be a good hero even if she wanted to be. What's she going to do in a fight? I guess she could stand there and take a beating to give her comrades a chance to leg it and leave her in the lurch but that's hardly impressive is it?
I'm a doctor. In fact, I work in Accident & Emergency. I can think of no reason to "crack someone's chest" when they're "going into septic shock". It just doesn't happen. Putting that enormous inaccuracy aside - why didn't they use the fact that her chest was open to add a bit more drama? The eclipse should have passed and she should have started to heal whilst all the medics were around. That would have made for a much more interesting story line (and another cool story for the doctors to regale their dinner guests around the table!).
Trouble At Mill
So there's trouble at the Bennett's mill (again). HRG let down Clare bear (again). For someone who cares about his daughter more than anything in the world he sure does let her down a lot doesn't he?
It was great to see Sylar going old school. I loved him storming into the room with his blood-soaked t-shirt and opening a can of telekinetic whoop-ass on HRG.

I don't (as yet) have a well-formed opinion on HRG's revelations about Sylar's parents. I do agree with HRG that Sylar has got serious mummy-issues though.
The end of this scene is, undoubtedly, my favourite scene of the season. Hiro teleports in, grabs Sylar, says "bad man" and teleports him away. I actually had to pause the show so I could stop laughing!
The Beach
I'm not really sure why Sylar killed Elle. I definitely can't work out why he did so before knobbing her again (she was sooo up for it). Sylar's "we're both damaged goods" line was true to form. I do think I prefer Sylar to his alter-ego Gabriel. I reckon the writers have had to "bring him back", so to speak, as I think Darth Petrelli is going to meet his maker in the next episode.
I'm also wondering whether or not Sylar can read people's memories when he takes a peek at their grey matter. What do you guys reckon?
Wow that was a long post! I hope you enjoyed it and I'll be back next week with a review of episode 12: "Our Father". Please sound off in the comments with your thoughts / suggestions / criticisms.
