Fun In Radiology
For those of you that know me, you’ll be well aware that I am constantly questioning what career I want to do in Medicine (or, indeed, if Medicine is the right career for me). I’m pleased to say that I think we may have had a breakthrough! I have been seriously considering Radiology for a while now and I decided to spend today (one of two rostered days off) in the Radiology department to see some things that I’ve not come across.
I only managed to see anything of interest in the morning when I watched a uterine fibroid embolisation. The consultant who I was with took a real interest and explained everything to me and had plenty of career advice to impart. It was absolutely fascinating to watch this guy pass a wire through somebody’s groin, over their aorta and into their uterine arteries and clog them up with some embolisation material. Interventional Radiology is quite similar to surgery in a lot of ways and that is appealing to me.
Applications are not until the New Year but I am currently trying to secure an audit in Radiology to add to my CV to boost my chances of a successful application. The one downside to Radiology (assuming I can even get into it) is that it is un-banded for the first two years (essentially a £15-£20,000/year pay cut). A means to an end though I suppose…
