Two Weeks Later

Here we are, two weeks (16 days to be precise) after moving into our house that’s undergoing renovation. How are things I hear you say? Sort of nearly over. Sort of.

A lot has happened since we moved. Not only has the building work progressed but Anit and Bec came to stay the weekend before last (so six days after we moved) and Tammy and Dickon came immediately afterwards! Not to mention the fact that I worked a week on-call, Fi moved jobs and is now on nights, I’m still revising for MRCS part A and neither of us got paid properly! Now you can see why I haven’t had a chance to blog much!

That aside, they say that a picture is worth a thousand words and to that avail, here is a little video walkthrough of where we were last Friday.

As you can tell – the place looks very different to when we moved in. The WC has been relocated into the garage. The garage is now a proper room (my cinema if we ever finish!) and the kitchen is looking a little bit like a kitchen (to be honest, the kitchen fitter started today and there are actually kitchen units in the kitchen. We’re still looking at at least another week before we can move away from the microwave meals though…

I don’t have the energy to write about everything that has happened over the last couple of weeks but here are a few of the highlights:

  1. Our first (and only really) argument with the building company over the fact that the new boiler and shower weren’t ready for Anit and Bec’s arrival, thereby forcing us to head to Katie and Pauli’s place for showers before we went out for dinner
  2. The day after Anit and Bec arrived (Saturday) being very pleased that we could have a hot shower in our house for the first time (instead of at work or friend’s) until we found out that the sealant around the bath was shit causing us to flood our nice, newly plastered, ceiling in the dining room below
  3. Having to not only put shoes on to go downstairs but to take a torch with us (as we’ve been without downstairs lighting since we moved in)
  4. Discovering the joy of a builder’s “variation” charges. It would seem that when a builder kindly says he will do something, do so he will although he will charge a fortune for it
  5. Getting yelled at in theatre by my consultant for trying to sort out the patients on my ward (go figure)
  6. Doing my first solo carpal tunnel decompression
  7. Feeling pleased that Fi and I finally got around to buying a gas cylinder for our camping stove (thinking that we could increase our cooking repertoire) only to discover that our regulator doesn’t fit
  8. Washing up in the bathroom
  9. Using garden furniture indoors

Once the builders have finished (we’re hoping the end of this week) and the kitchen is done (possibly the beginning of next week) I’ll be feeling a lot more relaxed. There’s a lot to do still to do after they’ve left but we’ll be that much nearer having our own cinema…
