Insomnia
I’ve never been a very good sleeper but I’ve never really suffered with true insomnia until Thursday night. I had had the day off (Christmas shopping and, no, not very productive) and probably stayed up too late watching TV but I just couldn’t sleep. I went to bed at about 00:30 and didn’t fall to sleep until after 04:30! Fi was working a (very) late shift and arrived home at about 02:00 which I guess contributed to matters (since I tend to sleep worse when she’s not around) but this was ridiculous. I was so tired when my alarm went off at 06:30 for me to cycle to work that I just couldn’t do it. I actually phoned in sick because I was so tired! I felt like such a skiver but I really don’t think I would have been much use to anyone.
Instead of squandering my day off (which didn’t begin, in the end, until after 11:00 when I finally woke up) I used it productively and finished my audit (the management of renal colic in the Emergency Department – fun eh?). I still need to find the time to present it before we head back home for good.
On the subject of heading back to the UK, the date is set. We’re leaving Adelaide on the 30th January and will be back home (very) early on Saturday the 31st January. We’re flying with Singapore Airlines (they were the most competitively priced) and have lucked out and will be flying on the Airbus A380 on the second leg of the journey from Singapore to London. Not only that but we paid extra ($75 each) for exit-row seats on the A380 so I may actually have a comfortable journey! Why am I excited about the A380? Not only is it the largest passenger airliner ever made (cool in itself) but every seat is powered. That means I can use my laptop / iPod for the whole journey! It was a bit of a palava trying to pay for the exit-row seats as Singapore Airlines’ website is very unreliable – I just hope their aircraft are more reliable.
I (possibly) had some good news on Thursday in that I’ve been invited to an interview for a LAT ST1 ENT job in Bristol from February to August. This would be perfect for me as it would give me good experience and training and would provide a job in an area that Fi and I want to settle in. The trouble is that they have invited me to an actual interview, i.e. one in Bristol at the beginning of January! I have sent them an email asking if I could have some form of telephone interview. I’m keeping my fingers crossed because if this doesn’t come through then I’ve also applied for an ST1/2 job (again in Bristol – at the BRI) in Emergency Medicine. I must be nuts.
Fi came to the disturbing realisation the other day that some sexual deviant is stealing her knickers from our washing line! She’s lost about eight pairs in the last couple of weeks! They’re really nice ones to and she is both pissed and unnerved. To top that off – some little shit has snapped off one of our car’s windscreen wiper arms. Bloody convict country.
