First Day In PICU

Had some great news about Australia this morning. I checked my emails before I went to work and I had one from someone at Flinders. Essentially, Fi and I can’t get the jobs we want to do straight away (Paeds and Anaesthetics) as there are none available at the moment but they can give me a job in A&E and Fiona a job in Paediatric A&E and we can work until jobs become available. It’s not the ideal situation but at least we have heard from Oz and it’s positive news. Needless to say, I have been in a good mood all day because of this!

I am on study leave this all of this week which is why I am still staying with Fi. I’m supposed to be doing 5 days on PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) at the Childrens Hospital but I am hoping to cut it down to 3 days (therefore having 2 days off!). I had a very interesting but disturbing day. I saw a child return from cardiac surgery aged just 18 months (in fact his ‘neighbour’ has had cardiac surgery and is only 1 month old). There is a child with a severe head injury following a RTA who has had a decompression craniectomy. I also saw a little 1 year old girl with Pneumococcal menigitis who has coned. I don’t think I can hack PICU as a career, it’s bad enough seeing adults very unwell but seeing children is a whole other ball game.

I got to have a nice long lunch break with Fiona today which was lovely. It reminded me of the days at Weston. Fiona is still at work as she is on her acute week so I’m going to cook her a nice curry after I pick her up. I was going to make a nice casserole with whipped potatoes but Fi doesn’t seem to own a casserole dish or an electric whisk – i’ll rectify that tomorrow.

I think i’ll spend the next couple of hours working on Play2D.
